1. HONUS WAGNER, 1909-1911 — $ 2.8 MILLION
The flying German has the honor to possess the most expensive sports card of all time — and with a large margin.
The Wagner card of 1909-1911gg, issued by the American Tobacco Company, is very rare, there are only 57 known samples. Why so rare?
Wagner was an opponent of tobacco smoking and never gave his consent to use his image as a tobacco company. He was opposed to his image associated with tobacco, so he demanded to stop selling cards.
The company, having a couple of hundred cards, stopped production and thus, quite early, made this card rare.
In 2007, the card in perfect condition was sold for $ 2.8 million. Even in a bad state, the card received $ 262,000 in 2010 and the others brought in millions of dollars.
